Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring… until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something… unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don’t kill him first, that is.

REVIEW

*I’m reading this series with the lovely ladies over at Milky Way of Books and Keionda Hearts Books, so feel free to read along with us and link up your reviews*

I could kick myself for not starting this series sooner. Am I the only one who is just now getting to it? Please make me feel better, and say that you haven’t read it either. There are certain things that irked me with this book, but I still love it! My problem mostly stems from the MC, Kat. Girlfriend lost a few brain cells the moment HOT Daemon came into view. I mean, how can she not? The guy is darn good looking and is as annoying as a mosquito. I love his demeanor more than his talents. Still, he sure knew how to push Kitty Kat’s buttons.

Kat is new to the little small town in West Virginia. She only has her mom since her father died of cancer years before. *I hate cancer. It sucks the life out of the one you love, and at the end you barely recognize them. Rant over.* Aside from being the new girl, Kat is my kind of girl. I mean, she loves books and she blogs. Unfortunately, that is the only thing that makes me want to hang out with her. She changed the moment Daemon showed up with his muscles and beautiful green eyes. I drooled and swooned. No lie. Of course, there’s something about the kids next door, who seem to live alone, without a parent in sight. Then strange things start popping off and Daemon is always there to save his Kitten.

What I liked: Daemon. I love that he’s an alien. I love how he got under Kat’s skin and called her Kitten whenever he felt like it. I also love Dee, his sister. She just wanted a friend, but that friendship put Kat in harms way at every turn. I love the backstory of how they came to inhabit that little town. (It’s always the small towns, isn’t it?) I love the use of their powers, light and dark alike. Heck, I even liked Ash – with her crazy jealous behind. Even though she treated Kat with disdain, the girl added some teen cattiness to the story. There’s nothing like a good antagonist to give the story some twists, and Baruck fit the bill.

What Irked Me: Kat was too oblivious sometimes, but I can kind of see why the author made her that way. Still, she made me want to punch her. I don’t like the way Daemon made Kat feel like she was losing her mind in the beginning with his little tricks. How Kat reminded me of Bella Swan sometimes; always with the self sacrificing. She ran off to try and keep Baruck from killing Dee and ended up still getting Dee and Daemon in the middle of it.

Overall, great start to the series and I’m really looking forward to the next book. If you haven’t started this series, I highly recommend it. Well, at least this book. There are lots of cliche moments, but it’s still a great read.

  2. I still need to finish this series! I think I have two books left to go, but I got distracted when I had to wait for them to be published. I do remember the chemistry and banter was so much fun, but I agree, Katy annoyed the heck out of me sometimes! But hey, she is a teenager, so I’ll give her a little bit of a pass. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series! Wonderful review, Lekeisha! 🙂

  3. I remember absolutely loving the first book and then for whatever reason I just never read the rest. I really should read them, I know everyone seems to really love them. So glad you are starting this and loving it!

  4. I have read this book! I got it a while back as a kindle freebie and I seriously need to buy book 2 at some point and read it too. I liked the general story and the way the romance was going as well. I did think that the alien concept was a bit far-fetched sometimes because it was a little weird, and at some points I found it a bit too similar to Twilight. But aside from those little things I did quite enjoy this one! Hope you continue to like the readalong.

    • There were many “Twilight” moments for me with this book. It’s not surprising, considering it came out around the time that the hype for those vamps was at an all time high. Still, I enjoyed it and can’t wait to read the next one. Hopefully, I’ll love the whole series.

  5. Great review! I have had this sitting on my kindle for a long time. I think that i picked it up as a freebie a couple of years ago. I have seen a lot of great reviews and some not so great. It sounds like I should try to fit it in sometime soon. I didn’t realize it was an alien story and that really appeals to me.
