REVIEW

It’s official, I am so starting The Grisha Trilogy over Christmas break. I purchased the first book on Cyber Monday last year, and it has just been sitting on my kindle, like many other books that I need to read. I really love this book. The only reason I didn’t give it five stars is because of that darn cliffhanger ending. Cliffhangers are good for something, at least, because I’m counting down the days until Kaz and crew come back. This is part of the Grishaverse, but you do not have to read those books first to enjoy this. Yes, the Grisha are a part of this story, but this isn’t entirely about them. Yes, it centers around them and their abilities, but this is mainly about a gang of teens who take off on the biggest mission they’ve ever done.

Kaz, Inej, and Jesper are from the slums of Ketterdam and rule the Dregs with iron fists. If there’s one thing I’ve learned about people who live hard lives, is that they are survivors. Kaz answers to the old man, but he is very much a general in charge of his troops. He is a take-action kind of guy and you will not get the best of him without a fight. Kaz puts together a team to go and retrieve a scientist who created a very big problem for Grishas. Well, for some it may not be a problem, but for Merchants it’s a very big problem, and Kaz is hired to travel to foreign lands and get the target before all hell breaks loose. Kaz is moved by the money, and his fellow gang members are as well. Never mind that this might be a suicide mission, but if they don’t try, they’ll never know if they could have been rich. Mission is a go. What happens after, well….just hold on to your seats.

This book is filled with action, twists and turns that will leave your head spinning. Kaz is clever and he doesn’t trust anyone. He has called out traitors of his gang, and he has a painful past that eats at him throughout the story, so it’s no wonder he kept the big things to himself. What surprised me were the relationships of this crew. I didn’t know who the hell to trust. But, I know two people who have each others backs like no other – Kaz and Inej. I really wanted more from that angle but we are left hanging from a cliff. I just hope that Bardugo brings it with the next book, because I want to see Kaz raise some hell like only he can. I love him, limp and all. He’s crazy and badaxx, and I am just ready for more.

Other people helping out Kaz stood out, especially Nina – a Grisha, and Wylan – son of the merchant who hired Kaz. There are lots of things happening with the situation that I just cannot spoil. You have to read this book. Even if you haven’t read the Grisha books, like me, you will love this. I have seen not so great reviews about this book from Grisha fans, saying that they didn’t like the lack of Grisha and magic. Well, this isn’t about them. This is about the world of Ketterdam, so there wouldn’t be a whole lot of Grisha characters running around. Another thing, I usually don’t like so many POVs, but this book actually works out pretty well. You’re getting the main players thoughts, and with a story like this – it’s muuch needed to see just what the hell is going on. I hope you guys are ready for Dirtyhands, because I think he may be about to bring the rain in the next book. Highly recommended!
