REVIEW
This is another one of those books with a gorgeous cover, but the story doesn’t quite add up. I love romantic suspense, and I’m beginning to see why I really stopped reading it years ago; everything seems so bland and just meh. I was strolling through my Kindle and decided to give this one a go, but I was immediately on alert when the MC invited a strange, naked man into her rural cabin. I know, I know; it makes the story more suspenseful. But, I just can’t get over how some of these characters meet just to get the ball going.
Morgan came off as an intelligent woman who is grieving for her husband, whom was killed in a robbery. She quickly becomes an intelligent woman who makes stupid decisions regarding strange men. She couldn’t call the cops and EMS to come and check out the guy? No, she goes to check him out and drags him into her home. Okay, so she had a gun. Everything that happened after that was just so uninteresting, and I almost called it quits. Jack was an okay guy, but sometimes his thoughts didn’t line up with his actions. There was insta-attraction between Morgan and Jack, so there wasn’t time to ponder anything. Also, I felt that the writing could have been better. It was very amateurish and not at all what I expected going in. I have read some pretty great self-published books in this genre, that I didn’t even know were self published until I checked them out on Goodreads.
I love Mercenaries, Navy Seals, Marines, etc… so I pretty much have watched and read my share of stories about what they do. What I didn’t get from Jack, or any of the Rockfort Security guys, was that heavy sense of loyalty and control. They weren’t guarded or careful about anything- just amateurs. The guys they were up against were not the brightest bulbs in the box. It was all just ridiculously carried out. I’m not sure I’ll be reading the next book to see if the author’s writing has matured.
Morgan was all poised and polite on the first few pages, and then her thoughts immediately turned after meeting Jack. She was immature in her actions, for her to be a college professor and her husband’s death being the way it was. Just no. Not the worst book, but I would have liked this story to be more fleshed out than it is. The writing is very amateurish and the characters weren’t very smart for this type of plot.
I seem to remember this being an ok read, not mind blowing just ok. I had forgotten the details until reading your review.

It just didn’t live up to the hype.

Sorry this one didn’t work too well for you. I hate when that happens. There is a fine line of what works and what doesn’t work in romance for me.

I just wish that the author would have taken the time to actually plot this story.

Ugh! I hate it when a good premise doesn’t pan out.

*Sighs* I really wish that I wasn’t such a sucker for covers and a couple of reviews. I need to start digging deeper before I one-click these books.

I like romantic suspense too, but this doesn’t seem to live up to the cover. Sucks.

I would really love for you to read this, and just to see if I’m the only one who thinks that the writing is not good. I know you would break it down. LOL

I read this a while ago and if I remember right, I didn’t feel much for it either. I’m with you when it comes to Romantic Suspense- people’s actions and the way they think, etc need to match up with what the author is trying to tell you they are. If they’re a trained SEAL, then they should act like it.

I thought that Jack and Co. would be interesting. The way that Jack left Morgan in their company was so out of character for a merc. Mercs, Black-Ops, or any related organizations, take their missions seriously. Leaving a target in the hands of someone you don’t know nothing about? And he is in love with her? No way that would have happened in a better plotted story.

I like suspense but it does seem like ‘romantic’ suspense is kind of weird sometimes. Sometimes it’s pulled off well and other times is just unreal. Sorry this one didn’t work for you.

I have so many titles on my Kindle from when I was going through a phase, and binge reading nothing but RS. I really hate that I one clicked so many books!

Ugh… amateur writing? I hate that. Plus the whole premise of inviting a half naked man into her cabin in the woods doens’t sound very smart. Hoping your next read is better.

When I looked at the publisher’s name, I said to myself, “WTF?”. Surely, they had several editors go through this book? I have read amazing fanfiction that would blow this story out of the way.

I know what you mean about meh. Sometimes things seem to get sameish when it comes to a genre and it has the potential to take a lot of the fun out of it. And that does sound a bit unbelievable at times! But I guess it was an okay read.

Not enough to make me believe that these are former Seals and Marines. And the terrorist’s goal was just plain crazy. How they went about tricking him at the end? No way in the world would HS go in like that. It’s fiction, but I want believable fiction.
