I’m your protagonist—Reshma Kapoor—and if you have the free time to read this book, then you’re probably nothing like me.

Reshma is a college counselor’s dream. She’s the top-ranked senior at her ultra-competitive Silicon Valley high school, with a spotless academic record and a long roster of extracurriculars. But there are plenty of perfect students in the country, and if Reshma wants to get into Stanford, and into med school after that, she needs the hook to beat them all.

What’s a habitual over-achiever to do? Land herself a literary agent, of course. Which is exactly what Reshma does after agent Linda Montrose spots an article she wrote for Huffington Post. Linda wants to represent Reshma, and, with her new agent’s help scoring a book deal, Reshma knows she’ll finally have the key to Stanford.

But she’s convinced no one would want to read a novel about a study machine like her. To make herself a more relatable protagonist, she must start doing all the regular American girl stuff she normally ignores. For starters, she has to make a friend, then get a boyfriend. And she’s already planned the perfect ending: after struggling for three hundred pages with her own perfectionism, Reshma will learn that meaningful relationships can be more important than success—a character arc librarians and critics alike will enjoy.

Of course, even with a mastermind like Reshma in charge, things can’t always go as planned. And when the valedictorian spot begins to slip from her grasp, she’ll have to decide just how far she’ll go for that satisfying ending. (Note: It’s pretty far.)

Why am I waiting on this book?

Not for the reasons you think. I’m not excited because it may be a great read. Quite the opposite. I want to read it because of the negative reviews. But why Lekeisha? Because it sounds like one that may make me rant, or I could actually turn out to like the MC. She seems like an okay person from the description, but reviewers are hating her. LOL! Which brings me to this next reason. Other authors are 5 starring it. I want to know if they really love it, or it’s because they’re friends with the author and just decided to post some positives. One author actually has it shelved under “author-friends” on Goodreads. Anyways, it looks to be really good or really bad. I just want to read it for myself. Plus the MC is a POC. I’m quite sure I won’t be able to relate to her character entirely, but there has to be something there. What do you guys think? And what book are you waiting on this week?

  1. This is a new book to me, and I’m kind of intrigued by this book for the reasons you mentioned! I don’t usually want to read a book with negative reviews, haha. Thanks for sharing!

  2. It’s interesting that the negative reviews are what have drawn you to this book! It sounds like it has a few similarities with another book that I read called The Rearranged Life. Likewise, the main character in that one is also a study machine!

  3. This is probably one of the most intriguing and unconventional premises I’ve seen from a YA contemporary novel in a long time. A shame that it’s apparently getting bad reviews from everyone but authors? Sounds kind of iffy to me too (of course, after this comment I’m rushing to Goodreads to check them out, lol!) but I can’t deny the story sounds really good. I hope you’ll end up enjoying it, despite your misgivings!

  4. I don’t think I’ve heard of this one. I’m really hoping you review it now though. I want to see if it’s actually that bad or not as well. P.s. I’m sick of author’s rating their friends books 5 stars. Sometimes I wonder if they even read it.

  5. I hadn’t heard of this book before reading your post, so I wasn’t aware of the early initial reactions to the MC, but if I had done like you I think I would have been intrigued in giving this book a go! Thanks for putting this book on my radar Lekeisha! 🙂

  6. Teehee! I think this is a good enough reason to want to read this! ❤ I'm interested too to know whether or not this book is any good or if the author friends are just trying to help this book out… The title is pretty intriguing but anywho, I hope you're that one black sheep and are able to relate to it! 🙂

  7. Interesting cover. I’m curious after reading the blurb. This is the first I’m coming across this book but I’d like to know why it’s receiving negative reviews too. Personally, I don’t read books based on any review (good or bad). I usually give them a try if the blurb appeals to me and if the cover is nice (yes, I admit it). Would love to read it for myself and find out why people dislike the character. Thanks for sharing 🙂

    Happy Wednesday!

  8. ahh I actually have an arc of this, and I just want to get into it and see what this is all about. I tend to only trust myself when it comes to reviews, so even if i see negative ones, I’ll still read the book. haha I hope this one pleasantly surprises us both!

  9. I am so with you on this reason. There are quite a few books I want to read just because I hear it’s amazing or horrible. I don’t often believe every (most) reviews I read.

UGH. THIS. It annoys me so much and honestly this is EVERY debut book on Goodreads now. All I see on a homepage is a bunch of authors rating it 5 stars.
Looking forward to your review for this one, Lekeisha!!

  12. I read the synopsis first and thought it was really interesting and could make a great movie to then I read your comments about the many negative reviews. I wonder why many people didn’t like it. It does sound interesting. Hope you get to post your review sometime soon. I would like to read your views about it.
