In this utterly sweet and moving women’s fiction novel, a celebrity comes to town and sweeps a young woman – who is used to being overlooked – off her feet.

Sophie May is content with her life in her small English village, working in the local coffee shop and living with her mom. But when famous actor Billy comes to town to play Mr. Darcy in a new film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, Sophie’s quiet life is quickly turned on its head. Billy is adored by women around the world, but he only wants Sophie on his arm. But being with Billy comes at a price, and Sophie is thrown in the spotlight after years of shying away from attention. Can she handle the constant scrutiny that comes with being with Billy?

Brimming with humor, wit, and genuine warmth, Billy and Me is a book about taking a chance on life and on love.

My Thoughts

3-red-stars

I received a copy of this book for free, from the publisher, in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Billy and Me is exactly the type of book you’d want to take to the beach with you. Although you may scare your fellow beach goers when you start screaming at Sophie, I think it’s a good fluffy read to keep your mind occupied. I wanted to love this more, but I just can’t give it more than three stars. That being said, I may read the next book to see if the writing is more developed. I think this one reads more like some of the fan fiction that I’ve read; but I’ve also read some amazing fan fiction that I find better than some published books.

Sophie is one of those characters that are comfortable not leaving the small town they’ve grown up in. She loves working at the coffee shop and seeing the same people everyday. However, she wasn’t always so dull. She was once a bubbly, outgoing person, until something happened. Wait for it; it’s not as dramatic as I thought, but whatever. Then, the actors and actresses come to film Pride and Prejudice, and everything changes. I would say that it’s rather cliche that she falls for Billy, who plays Mr. Darcy. The heart wants what the heart wants. I thought the story was moving along smoothly, until I spend more time with Sophie and Billy.

Some of this was really cute, but then Billy would say something lame and it would just get cheesy. Then, Sophie starts becoming irritated with Billy’s profession. More importantly, the romantic scenes with characters of the opposite sex. It kind of made me mad that he was willing to give up his passion for her. Even though there’s some good times with them as a couple, that particular aspect rubbed me the wrong way. I understand why it was added to the story, but I was still too mad to really care about this being fiction. I think that Sophie is likable, but she’s not a character that I could just absolutely adore. I love her uncomplicated life choices, but she also realizes a lot of things and she grows some. Billy is charming in some ways, but then he has the ability to act like he has to be the guy who has every quality in the book that women look for in a man.

Overall, I think if you enjoy reading something fluffy, with a little bit of fuss, then this is a good book to read. The writing isn’t all that great, but it’s not terrible. Again, I’ve read fan fiction that’s written better. Recommended.

  1. I’m liking this redesigning I am seeing here on the blog! Also, I think I understand this book. It sounds light and fun and like a very sweet romance. But then I guess having this big thing waiting to find out why Sophie changed and then knowing it isn’t that big of a deal can be annoying I guess! I know sometimes things can get cheesy but I found out I am the cheesy kind of reader so I might not mind that aspect of things too much… 😉

  2. Hold up! When did you do the makeover? I love it!

I have a small suggestion if you don’t mind. The tag box in the bottom, maybe you can make it wider and shorter so the page doesn’t run “long” in the end? Makes it cleaner.

Okay, you can shoot me if I overstepped 😀

    • I was so tired of looking at the pink and peach. I just had so much on my mind yesterday, and decided to change things. I will def do that tomorrow! And no, you are not overstepping. Please feel free to give me advice!

  3. I do often like cheesy …. except when I don’t. You know, there’s pepper jack (like it) and then there’s Cheez Whiz (not so much). This sounds a little like This is What Happy Looks Like, with the romance between the small town girl and the actor..

  5. Will you be continuing with the series? The second book comes out this year…
I have this book for sth like a year now but I still haven’t read it.
    I do plan to eventually.
I have no idea why, but somehow I had high hopes for this one, but now after your review I think it would be better to l+not expect too much…

Have you read her novel You’re the One That I want (I think that’s the title)? I’ve heard that that one is emotional but I haven’t read it (yet).

    • I do plan to read the next book, but I won’t be buying it. It’ll be a library read, or I’ll request to review it. I do hope that it reads better than this one. I don’t think this is a bad read, it just isn’t up to par with my reading level. If I had just started reading, and read this book, I’d probably rate it 5 stars. But, as the case may be, I’ve read better. Still, it’s a good enough book so I hope you give it a shot. I’ve not read anything else by her yet.

      • I will give it a try because I paid for it so I wouldn’t want to waste my money, if you know what I mean… But I’ll just control myself before I buy her new book because there is a chance I end up not liking this one.
I know what you mean when you say you’d like it better if you just started reading.

  6. I’m kind of wary about those “celebrity comes out of nowhere and sweeps small town girl off her feet” kind of stories, so many of them have been done and yes, sometimes they can be quite cheesy! But I do love the sound of this one and the cover is lovely.

    • The thing about this one is that I have read a lot of “Twilight” fan fiction with this same theme. And this reads like some of them, and why I don’t really love it as much as I would have liked. Still, it kept me reading, and it definitely isn’t boring. The writing just isn’t that well developed.

  7. Huh, I perked up with the whole P&P film coming to town scenario, but I think forcing someone to quit their career b/c of insecurity would bug me, too. Still, maybe at some point, I’ll snag it.

  8. Ehhh cheesy books are not really my jam, lately. This does sound like it has its cute moments. I would be so irritated with the MC for being annoyed with Billy’s profession and him wanting to abandon his work to be with her.
