Trixie Watson has two very important goals for senior year: to finally save enough to buy the set of Doctor Who figurines at the local comic books store, and to place third in her class and knock Ben West–and his horrendous new mustache that he spent all summer growing–down to number four.

Trixie will do anything to get her name ranked over Ben’s, including give up sleep and comic books–well, maybe not comic books–but definitely sleep. After all, the war of Watson v. West is as vicious as the Doctor v. Daleks and Browncoats v. Alliance combined, and it goes all the way back to the infamous monkey bars incident in the first grade. Over a decade later, it’s time to declare a champion once and for all.

The war is Trixie’s for the winning, until her best friend starts dating Ben’s best friend and the two are unceremoniously dumped together and told to play nice. Finding common ground is odious and tooth-pullingly-painful, but Trixie and Ben’s cautious truce slowly transforms into a fandom-based tentative friendship. When Trixie’s best friend gets expelled for cheating and Trixie cries foul play, however, they have to choose who to believe and which side they’re on–and they might not pick the same side.

 

Review

If you are looking for some nerdy, geeky fun, then look no further. The Only Thing Worse Than Me Is You is one of the two funnest books I’ve read this year – the other one being Don’t Get Caught  by Kurt Dinan. It was just what I needed when my mood swings were at an all time high. 

What I Liked

I love that this book is full of super smart kids getting into mischief. The synopsis lets you know that this is full of fangirling/fanboying, so I was prepared to have my moments. I love my superheroes, book characters, TV shows/movies, and music. Relating to these uber cool kids was a no-brainer, and that’s what made it such fun to read. Amidst the Doctor Who, Sherlock, Buffy, Supernatural, Game of Thrones, etc…. talk, there was also the reality of school life. These are no slackers here, and I appreciate that more than anything. 

Trixie and Ben were hilarious and so freaking cute! Ben and that mustache just about did me in. I also love the friendships. Even when Meg and Harper start making googly eyes for the boys, Trixie wants to remain indifferent. Not! She and Ben started off with the name calling and competitiveness when it came to school status, but I knew that it would all blow up in their faces soon enough. *swoons*

What I Didn’t Like

Although Trix is super cool, I still found her views on certain things a little crazy. There’s more to life than perfect GPA’s, comics and awesome TV shows, and she wanted Meg and Harper to stand firmly with her in those beliefs. I know, I’m being petty, but it bothered me enough that I couldn’t give it another star. Sue me.

Should You Read This Book?

Yes! If you have any nerdy bone in your body, I guarantee that this book will hit the spot. The writing flows perfectly, and it’s filled with all the things a fun YA contemporary needs. I am really looking forward to reading more books by Anderson, so hopefully she will keep them coming. And now I leave you with some amazing cheekbones. Because…. who doesn’t love Benedict Cumberbatch? I’m so ready to see him in Doctor Strange this November! *Yes, I’m squealing right now*
