Waiting on Wednesday #39 – The Female of the Species

Untitled

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we are eager to get our hands on.

This week I’m waiting on………

25812109The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis

Publication: September 20th 2016

Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books

Genres: YA, Mystery, Contemporary, Thriller

Alex Craft knows how to kill someone. And she doesn’t feel bad about it. When her older sister, Anna, was murdered three years ago and the killer walked free, Alex uncaged the language she knows best. The language of violence.

While her crime goes unpunished, Alex knows she can’t be trusted among other people, even in her small hometown. She relegates herself to the shadows, a girl who goes unseen in plain sight, unremarkable in the high school hallways.

But Jack Fisher sees her. He’s the guy all other guys want to be: the star athlete gunning for valedictorian with the prom queen on his arm. Guilt over the role he played the night Anna’s body was discovered hasn’t let him forget Alex over the years, and now her green eyes amid a constellation of freckles have his attention. He doesn’t want to only see Alex Craft; he wants to know her.

So does Peekay, the preacher’s kid, a girl whose identity is entangled with her dad’s job, though that does not stop her from knowing the taste of beer or missing the touch of her ex-boyfriend. When Peekay and Alex start working together at the animal shelter, a friendship forms and Alex’s protective nature extends to more than just the dogs and cats they care for.

Circumstances bring Alex, Jack, and Peekay together as their senior year unfolds. While partying one night, Alex’s darker nature breaks out, setting the teens on a collision course that will change their lives forever.

Why am I waiting?

I’m a huge fan of McGinnis’ writing. I may not love the plot of her stories, or a certain character, but her writing is always on point. When I read NADTD back in 2013, the first thing I said to myself after finishing was, this doesn’t feel very dystopian, but the writing sure is great. I have become addicted to her books over the years, and I have no doubt that I will devour this one. I have yet to give one of her books a solid 5 stars. Could this be the one? What book are you waiting on this week?

  1. I’m glad you’re loving McGinnis’s books! I’ve read all three of her previous books, and I gave them three stars across the board. So this will be the first of hers that I won’t read! I think her books just aren’t for me — not that three stars is bad. =) I hope you enjoy this book when you get a chance to read it!

Have a wonderful week, Lekeisha. =)

  3. I have only heard good things about her books and seeing as I read A Madness So Discreet and surprisingly really enjoyed it, I can’t wait to get into this one too! I should also go back and read her first two books at some point as well.

  4. I feel the same way about McGinnis. I don’t ADORE her books, but I like them and her writing is excellent. This book sounds like a departure from her others. Can’t wait to see what it’s all about. I downloaded it from Netgalley (or Edelweiss?) and am hoping to get to it soon.

    • I am hoping that this will be a 5 star read for me. Each book of hers gets better as I read. The first was 3 stars, and the last 2 were 4 stars. I have a feeling this will be the one. Thanks for stopping by!
