When Tate Collins meets airline pilot Miles Archer, she knows it isn’t love at first sight. They wouldn’t even go so far as to consider themselves friends. The only thing Tate and Miles have in common is an undeniable mutual attraction. Once their desires are out in the open, they realize they have the perfect set-up. He doesn’t want love, she doesn’t have time for love, so that just leaves the sex. Their arrangement could be surprisingly seamless, as long as Tate can stick to the only two rules Miles has for her.

Never ask about the past.
Don’t expect a future.

They think they can handle it, but realize almost immediately they can’t handle it at all.

Hearts get infiltrated.
Promises get broken.
Rules get shattered.
Love gets ugly.

~Review~

I should’ve known this one wasn’t for me. I didn’t think too hard about the title, so I ignored the description. I’ve had this, and two other CoHo novels, on my ereader for a while. After all of the great reviews for this and her other books, I decided to go ahead and jump on the train to Hooverland. Admittedly, this is a bad start, but I’m willing to keep on this journey.

Reasons this book didn’t work for me…

Unlikable main characters: Tate and Miles are a pair. They truly belong together. I hate it when a woman lets a man walk all over her. At the start, Tate seemed like my kind of girl. Hard worker, ambitious, and the way that she came off on that elevator scene made me think that she plays no games when it comes to the opposite sex. Well, I was wrong. She may can spot a married dog on the prowl, but she sure lacks the confidence to walk away from a guy who, obviously, is an emotional wreck. Why do these women insist on saving these broody men? Miles is a jerk 90% of the time. Even in the end, his difficulty didn’t leave me feeling like everything was okay.

Hotness doesn’t mean you need to act like a weakling: Tate turned to goo around Miles. What was supposed to be a friends-with-benefits type of deal, turns into a big drama fest. Miles sending mixed signals all over the place. Tate giving in and letting him just turn her into his play thing. But….Tate knows in her heart that he loves her but something is holding him back. Which brings me to my next point.

Did Miles’ POV have to be written poetically? I think that is what really added to my ire. By this point, we as readers know that he has had something tragic happen in his past. Rachel, Rachel, Rachel.  That doesn’t make his behavior okay. I’m sorry, but this setup didn’t work for me.

Colleen has a way with words. I was way passed liking Miles by the time it all spilled out. But…she almost convinced me to love this story. That and the need to see how it would end, made me keep reading. There are plenty of men walking around with broken hearts. What makes Miles special? I can see if he started out rude, and changed his tune. He was too controlling but not really talking about why he can’t be in a relationship. I guess he just needed someone like Tate to come along and put up with his crap until she made him spill the beans. I feel for him, but not enough to like him as a character.

This really isn’t a badly written book, it just has two characters that I don’t like. The title is true to the plot: Ugly Love. I wanted to love this so hard, and I almost did at the end, but I just don’t like the two main characters. I say read this for yourself to decide. A lot of readers love this book, so please don’t take my word for it.

  1. Awww:( Sorry this wasn’t a good read for you and that you dint’ bond with the characters like you wanted to! I TRIED one of her other books and didn’t really care for it. I may try It Ends With Us since it’s supposed to be SO GOOOODDD and all of that. So, I guess we’ll see, won’t we? I hope your next read is better, lovely! ❤

  2. Sorry this didn’t work for you, Lekeisha. I enjoyed it – not as much as other CoHo books, but it completely slayed me anyway. I completely get what you mean about the unhealthy relationship between Tate and Miles, though. I was so immersed in the story when I read it that it didn’t really bother me at the time, which is proof of CoHo’s excellent writing 😉

  3. You know I never thought too much about the title until now! But that makes a lot of sense, and I guess this won’t be one for me either really. I’m not a big fan of romances where the girl becomes a pushover and doesn’t have her own backbone. And it’s funny because it seems like she would be the hard working and independent kind, but then that just doesn’t work out that way…

    • I think the real point is to see that Miles has had a tragic past and if the reader sympathizes with him enough to look over the way he has acted up to that point of the reveal. I didn’t like him overall, even though I felt sorry for him.

  4. Sorry this one wasn’t for you! This was my first CoHo read and I loved it. However I can 100% understand your issues and see why it would not be for you. I hope your next read is WAY better for you!! 🙂

  5. Totally agree with you! This book wasn’t for me either. I hated Miles’ POV. It just didn’t seem realistic coming from a guy. I enjoyed Hopeless and Confess but not this one. And I’m a bit scared to read some of her other books cause they seem a tad similar to Ugly Love, especially Maybe Someday. If you do read any more of her books, hope you like them. Good luck either way 🙂

  6. LaKeisha! It’s been so long, I must do better! I have to say the way you wrote this review has me kind of intrigued about the plot, even though you didn’t like the main characters. It sorta kinda reminds me of how I hated the MC’s in Gobe Girl, but the plot kept me reading anyway.

But here is hoping that the next novel by this author is more to your liking!

  7. This will probably not make my wishlist… but I do have this author on it. I will have to remember not to pick up this book as I know I would have the same problems as you did and I want to like her work. 🙂 Brilly review.

    • I wanted to Kick Tate up her ass. She made so many excuses for Miles and the author really turned her into a YA character. Scratch that, I’ve read plenty YA romances with the protagonists having more backbone than her.

    • She has a way with words but this story isn’t empowering for women, IMO. There are plenty of controlling men in reality that people tell the woman to run the other way. He’s not physically abusive, but he was so emotionally distant and trying to control her, that it made me hate him. Even after the “why” came out.

  8. I still haven’t read a CoHo book yet. I guess I’ve been gun-shy of the heavy drama and emotions that all of them seemed blessed with. I do want to read one b/c I’ve seen so many people love them. I’ll maybe pick up a different one now and definitely not this one. 😉

    • I think if she can write drama and angst, she can write other subgenres. I get writing what you know, but sometimes you have to move on to something else. I’m sure her fans would love to read something different from her. But WTH do I know? LOL!

  9. Great review! I also did not care for this one and I completely agree with you re: the characters being unlikable. I didn’t like either of them in this whole thing and found them unbearable together — it was so unnecessary.
