This Week I’m Waiting On…..

26594801The Education of Margot Sanchez by Lilliam Rivera

Publication: February 21st 2017

Publisher: Simon & Schuster BFYR

Genres: YA, Contemporary, Cultural

Pretty in Pink comes to the South Bronx in this bold and romantic coming-of-age novel about dysfunctional families, good and bad choices, and finding the courage to question everything you ever thought you wanted—from debut author Lilliam Rivera.

Mami, for destroying my social life
Papi, for allowing Junior to become a Neanderthal
Junior, for becoming a Neanderthal
This supermarket
Everyone else

After “borrowing” her father’s credit card to finance a more stylish wardrobe, Margot
Sanchez suddenly finds herself grounded. And by grounded, she means working as an indentured servant in her family’s struggling grocery store to pay off her debts.

With each order of deli meat she slices, Margot can feel her carefully cultivated prep school reputation slipping through her fingers, and she’s willing to do anything to get out of this punishment. Lie, cheat, and maybe even steal…

Margot’s invitation to the ultimate beach party is within reach and she has no intention of letting her family’s drama or Moises—the admittedly good looking but outspoken boy from the neighborhood—keep her from her goal.

Why Am I Waiting?

I’m looking forward to the diversity in this book! Margot is (I think) Puerto Rican and will do anything to fit in. I’m looking forward to the Spanish slang that will no doubt make an appearance. How will Margot find balance with who she is and what she wants? I’m hoping to relate to her in some way, but it’ll be good just to read this since it’s an Own Voices book, and I’m pretty sure the author will rock this. It’s being marketed as Pretty in Pink comes to the South Bronx, so of course I want this! I want to see if Margot is very Andie-like, and hopefully learn something more about the Latinx community. What book are you waiting on this week? Isn’t that cover gorgeous?

  1. Now this one really sounds like the main character is going to get the opportunity to really understand how difficult it is going to be to constantly try and fit in all the time. And hopefully somewhere along the way she’ll be able to find herself and who she is individually as well.

  2. I really like the cover. The title is something else though, couldn’t really figure it out on first glance but the blurb makes it clearer. This sounds pretty interesting and I like the diversity angle too. I hope you will enjoy the book when you finally get your copy:-)

  3. I saw Pretty in Pink meets… and yes, I want to give this one a go, too. I like the Hispanic neighborhood/cultural element to make it a fresh story.

I love comments, and try to reply as often as I can. Know that I read each and every one.
