Review

I absolutely loved Harmon’s The Law of Moses & The Song of David, so I knew that I was in for an emotional roller coaster with this book. I love the way she writes and creates these memorable characters. By the time I got to the end of this story, I felt like I was floating or something. As sad as some of this was, I didn’t cry. Instead, I tried to understand the messages that this story had to offer. A once beautiful boy returns home a scarred man, and is emotionally detached. A once ugly girl has now become beautiful in the eyes of said ugly boy.

Don’t let those words offend you, it’s just the way I see Ambrose and Fern. It took a lot of heartache and pain for Ambrose to really see Fern; which made me appreciate this story all the more. Fern is a hopeless romantic. I liked that quality about her, but the fact that she was so insecure about herself in the beginning made me not LOVE her. Ambrose is not the beautiful, confidant boy before Iraq. He’s seen terrible things, and terrible things have happened to him. And we’ve all read these types of stories before, but I don’t think I’ve ever read one quite like this. Harmon has a way with words, and before you know it you’re so emotionally invested in the story, that by the end you’re not sure how to feel. 

This is a story that’s meant to be savored. You can’t fly through it so easily, because the characters’ struggles are real and you feel so connected to them. I don’t like to define people by their looks, so I was hesitant in the beginning. It turns out so beautiful, and I love the supporting characters. Bailey is just as important a character as Fern, so that added even more to the story. I have never just wanted to be in the presence of a character so badly. He’s just so……gah! I loved his outlook, even when he has physical disabilities. Such a wise character, and the author really brought him to life.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll most likely be saying it again, Amy Harmon has a gift. There are incredible writers everywhere, and I’ve yet to experience them all, but there are no words for how great she is. If you’ve not tried her books, then I have no idea what you are waiting for. I recommend starting with Making Faces, or you know, my all-time favorite – The Law of Moses. Who cares where you start, just go grab her books!
